Independent road safety advisory · Trading from April 2027

The evidence from every crash should shape every technology that comes next.

I work across prevention technology and post-crash response — two fields usually kept apart — so agencies and technology developers can tell what actually reduces death and injury, not just what's new.

The idea

Prevention and response are one line of evidence.

Road safety is usually treated as two separate worlds. I work across both, because the evidence from one should shape the other — and very few advisors in Australia currently connect the two.

  1. Before the crash

    Technology assessment

Intelligent Transport Systems, AI-based event detection and connected vehicle systems — evaluated on evidence, not vendor claims.

  2. During & after

    Post-crash response & investigation

What happens in the vital minutes and months after a crash: serious crash investigation, cross-agency coordination, evaluation.

  3. Feeding back

    Evidence-linkage

Using what crash investigation shows to sharpen the next round of technology assessment.

The loop closes: findings from real crashes show where new technology would — and wouldn't — have changed the outcome.

What I do

Two disciplines, one line of evidence

Response 01

Post-Crash Response & Serious Crash Investigation

Program design and methodology transfer for agencies wanting to build serious crash investigation capability.

  • Program design & methodology transfer
  • Evaluation frameworks
  • Cross-agency coordination linking emergency services, health and transport data
Prevention 02

Road Safety Technology Assessment

Independent evaluation of emerging road safety technologies for government procurement decisions, and due-diligence reviews for startups validating safety claims.

  • Government procurement & policy advice
  • Independent due-diligence reviews for investors, regulators and government buyers
  • Regulatory horizon-scanning

03 · Connecting the two

Evidence-Linkage Advisory

Using post-crash investigation findings to sharpen technology evaluation — identifying where new technology would (and wouldn't) have changed outcomes in real crash data.

Why this matters now

Prevention technology is evolving faster than the evidence base that should guide it.

At the same time, most agencies have no dedicated capability to learn systematically from the crashes that still occur.

I sit at the intersection of both — able to tell government and industry not just what's new, but what actually works, based on what the evidence shows.

Who I work with

Agencies, national bodies and the people building the technology

  • Government transport agencies
  • Health & emergency services
  • Austroads & national road safety bodies
  • Road safety technology startups & vendors
  • Insurers & fleet operators

Availability: engagements with NSW State Government are on hold through 2027. Work with other Australian and New Zealand jurisdictions, Austroads and the private sector is available.

About

John Wall

Founder · Post-Crash Response Innovator · Grounded Technologist · Road Safety Technology Leader

After more than 18 years leading road safety technology at Transport for NSW, I am now building one of the first in-depth Safe System crash investigation programs developed in-house by an Australian government transport agency. Detailed crash investigation has largely been the domain of private investigators; transport agencies have rarely had a capability of their own. The program addresses the "missing pillar" of the Safe System approach: what happens in the vital minutes and months after a crash occurs.

I have run multi-million-dollar field trials collecting millions of data points, including the CITI Connected Vehicle Project and the Mobile Phone Detection Camera Pilot, and spent almost three years at Austroads — the peak body for Australian and New Zealand road transport agencies — establishing its Future Vehicles & Technology Research Program.

I am also a volunteer Commander with the NSW State Emergency Service, with more than three decades of command experience, and hold national qualifications in road crash rescue. I sit on local rescue and emergency management committees and regularly attend road crash rescue incidents, both as a rescue operator and in command.

Few people work on both crash prevention and crash response. I do both, and each makes me better at the other.
